White Zsolnay RABBIT FIGURINE _ 1475
White Zsolnay RABBIT FIGURINE _ 1475
This Zsolnay rabbit figurine is a rare unpainted white example that left the Pécs manufactory before receiving its final hand-painted decoration. Unlike the fully finished versions, these pieces remained in their pure white porcelain state - offering a rare glimpse into the production process of the Zsolnay factory.
Founded in 1853, the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory became internationally renowned not only for its eosin glazes and architectural ceramics, but also for its meticulously hand-painted figurines. In the traditional workflow, sculpted porcelain figures were fired, glazed in white, and then carefully hand-painted by skilled decorators before a final firing. Occasionally, unfinished white pieces circulated outside the factory - whether as samples, studio remnants, or special releases - making them significantly rarer than their painted counterparts.
The absence of decoration reveals the strength of the sculptural modeling itself: the subtle detailing of the fur, posture, and expression become more pronounced without color. The result is a minimal yet highly collectible object, refined and historically intriguing.
A rare and unusual chapter of Zsolnay’s figurine production - where the beauty of form stands entirely on its own.
