Striped Csákvár JAR _ 1451

This traditional earthenware jar (szilke) from Csákvár, Hungary reflects a well-known decorative tradition of the region. Dating back in form to the second half of the 19th century, Csákvár potters produced distinctive striped vessels that became widespread, especially along the southern shore of Lake Balaton (Marcali, Kadarkút).
Characterized by its green striped surface, this piece belongs to that lineage of vertically or rhythmically banded ceramics, where brown, yellow, and green glazes were commonly used to animate the form.
The szilke - also known regionally as sirán, rátó, or röstölő - is a glazed vessel inside and out, designed for everyday kitchen use. Its rounded body and handle make it practical and durable, while the striped decoration adds a subtle yet distinctive visual identity.
Today, this piece carries both functional presence and the layered cultural memory of Hungarian folk ceramics - a balance of use, ornament, and regional tradition.
