Porcelain BOWL with kenzan needle _ 1384
Porcelain BOWL with kenzan needle _ 1384
Created in 2018 as part of an exhibition body of work, this textured chamotte porcelain bowl by Ferenc Halmos is a rare and highly individual piece. Its elongated, shell-like form is defined by carved, rhythmic grooves that run along the body, resembling the interior structure of a seashell or the layered formation of sedimentary rock.
The surface glaze carries a soft sheen - slightly glossy - allowing light to glide across the textured ridges. The pale turquoise tone enhances the naturalistic reference, while the chamotte content gives the porcelain a granular, tactile quality.
Integrated into the bowl is a kenzan needle holder, traditionally used in Japanese ikebana flower arranging. This addition transforms the piece into both sculptural object and functional floral vessel, bridging Hungarian studio ceramics with Eastern aesthetic sensibilities.
Halmos’ background in ceramic chemistry is evident in the precision of the glaze and firing. His long-standing dedication to glaze experimentation - from crystalline porcelain to reduction-fired lusters - informs even these more organic, nature-driven works. This piece is a striking example of his ability to unite technical mastery with elemental inspiration.
