Orange HANGING PLANTER by Béla Mihály

Orange HANGING PLANTER by Béla Mihály

A striking ceramic hanging planter by Hungarian designer and ceramist Béla Mihály (1930–2001), glazed in a vivid orange tone. Designed with two mouths and perforated planting sections, the vessel reflects Béla’s innovative approach to functional objects that encourage creative floral and botanical arrangements.
Béla Mihály, originally a florist by profession, gained early recognition for his skill in floral design, even preparing bouquets for Queen Elisabeth of Hungary. This background deeply shaped his ceramic work: he developed a unique line of vessels in the 1960s and 70s specifically to serve ikebana and plant compositions, merging floral art with modern Hungarian craft.
His works are characterized by bold forms, practical experimentation, and an instinctive sense of harmony between plant and object. Today, his ceramics stand as rare collector’s pieces, celebrated for their dual identity as sculpture and functional design, embodying the creative crossroad of Hungarian mid-century applied arts.
