Large oval BASKET

Woven from roof thatch, these mainly low, flat baskets reflect the quiet ingenuity of Hungarian rural craft. Once used for storing eggs, grains, freshly baked bread, or dried herbs, their form speaks of practicality shaped by hand and need. Rush weaving was a seasonal village activity, tied to the rhythm of the marshlands: harvested in late summer, dried, and plaited through the colder months when fieldwork paused.
In the countryside, such baskets carried not only objects but habits of resourcefulness and renewal: when worn, they became cradles for chicks or tools for gathering berries and greens.
Part of Finecut’s Fall ‘25 selection, these pieces continue that lineage, everyday designs elevated by time, holding both function and memory within their woven strands.
