Géza Gorka teal ram - Iparművészeti Vállalat Edition _ 1330

Géza Gorka teal ram - Iparművészeti Vállalat Edition _ 1330

This sculptural ram bowl was designed by Géza Gorka and produced by the Iparművészeti Vállalat (Applied Arts Company) in Hungary. While created in series, each piece carries subtle variations due to hand-finishing and glaze application, making every example slightly unique.

This particular ram stands out with its strong, vibrant teal glaze - a rarer and more intense colour variation within the production. The glossy surface has a lightly textured character that recalls cracked earth or scaled animal skin, enhancing the sculptural presence of the form.

Géza Gorka (1894-1971) was one of the most significant Hungarian ceramic artists of the 20th century. His work bridged studio craft and state-supported applied arts production, shaping a distinctly Hungarian modern ceramic language rooted in folk inspiration yet refined through modernist clarity. His animal figures - rams, birds, penguins - became iconic motifs of Hungary’s postwar visual culture.

Both functional bowl and sculptural object, this ram embodies the synthesis that defined Gorka’s work: expressive design made accessible through applied arts production, while still retaining the individuality of the handmade process.
