This elongated ceramic dish, designed by Géza Gorka and produced by the Iparművészeti Vállalat (Applied Arts Company), reflects the unique intersection of artistic design and mid-century Hungarian applied arts production.
Raised on small feet, the form has a subtle elevation that enhances its sculptural presence. The exterior is finished in a deep graphite glaze, creating a strong, grounded base, while the interior reveals a lighter, more expressive surface: a pale neutral and teal ground with a crackle-effect glaze, overlaid with graphite floral motifs known as the Losonczi pattern. This contrast between dark exterior and luminous, patterned interior gives the piece a layered visual depth.
Géza Gorka (1894-1971), one of the most influential Hungarian ceramic artists of the 20th century, was known for translating folk-inspired motifs and natural forms into a modern ceramic language. Through the Iparművészeti Vállalat, his designs reached a wider audience, yet each piece retains individuality due to hand-finishing and glaze variation.
