Brown rectangular VASE with Handles by Béla Mihály
Brown rectangular VASE with Handles by Béla Mihály
A rare ceramic vase by Hungarian designer and ceramist Béla Mihály (1930–2001), crafted in a striking rectangular form with two delicate side handles. The deep brown glaze enhances its sculptural simplicity, reflecting the artist’s commitment to elegant, functional forms.
Béla Mihály began his career outside the formal art academies, largely self-taught, and rose to become one of the pioneers of ikebana ceramics in Hungary in the 1960s. His vessels were designed to complement floral compositions, but they stand alone just as powerfully as sculptural objects.
Beyond ceramics, Béla was also a florist by training, known to have created arrangements for important occasions, including for Queen Elisabeth of Hungary, a background that informed his sensitivity to form, proportion, and the dialogue between vessel and flower. His works were exhibited internationally and are today preserved in Hungarian museum collections, celebrated as a bridge between folk traditions, modern design, and applied arts.
This vase embodies his distinct design ethos: robust yet refined, modern yet rooted in tradition, a timeless piece of Hungarian mid-20th-century craft.
